Ask FASHIONPHILE Atelier: Restoration
FAQs

You asked. FASHIONPHILE Atelier answered.

Today, we’re pulling back the curtain on FASHIONPHILE Atelier. While 97% of the ultra-luxury accessories we receive require no restoration, our expert Restoration team knows a thing or two about those that do. From stain treatment to odor removal and at-home care, Luxury Restoration Supervisor Christine Corcoran-Valente answers your most asked questions.

A Note from FASHIONPHILE Atelier

Not every FAQ applies to all textiles, materials, or individual items. Each restoration case is unique, and results may vary depending on the condition, construction, color, and leather type. The answers below reflect general guidance based on the most common inquiries.
Hardware Repairs

Can FASHIONPHILE replace hardware, zippers, grommets, chains, or handles?

At this time, we do not offer any hardware replacement services. We do not have access to authentic manufacturer parts. If a component is missing or damaged, it will be clearly noted in the item’s condition description and reflected in the pricing.
However, we do clean and polish most hardware and zippers.
Odor Removal

What if an item still has an odor listed in the flaws section?

If you see odor listed under flaws, this means our team has already attempted professional odor removal but was unable to eliminate it fully. In these cases, we may have adjusted the price or condition rating. Unfortunately, no further treatment is available at this time.
Stain Treatment

Can all stains be removed during restoration?

While we use highly effective stain removal techniques, not all stains can be completely eliminated, especially on delicate materials like suede, silk, or Vachetta leather. Our team evaluates each item individually and will always take the safest route to preserve its quality.
Color Touchups

Will FASHIONPHILE perform color touchups or dye handbags?

We do not currently offer any dyeing or color restoration services. Our goal is to maintain the original authenticity of each item. However, we are actively exploring future service enhancements, and color work may be available down the line.
Ink Removal

How do you remove ink stains from an item?

Ink removal is highly subjective and assessed on a case-by-case basis. When we encounter an ink stain, we consider:
- The type of textile
- The ink’s location
- The risk of removing original color or causing additional damage

If we believe it is safe, we will gently test an ink remover on a small, inconspicuous area. If the ink lifts without affecting the material, we proceed cautiously. However, if removal may harm the item, we leave the ink as-is and note it in the item’s flaws. Any remaining ink will be reflected in the item’s condition rating and pricing.

Vachetta Leather Care

What should I know about Vachetta leather?

Vachetta is a natural, untreated leather that is especially sensitive to oils, water, and over-cleaning. Any marks, stains, or patina are usually permanent.
Bamboo and Leather Handle Care

How do I keep my bamboo handle (or leather handle) in shape when not using the bag?

Protecting the shape of your bamboo or leather handles during storage is very smart—although durable, both materials can warp, crack, or lose shape if not cared for properly.
Here are some gentle suggestions to help preserve your handles:

Please note: These are general guidelines. FASHIONPHILE is not responsible for storage outcomes based on these suggestions.

Soft Handle Shaper: Roll a soft cotton cloth (such as a clean T-shirt or muslin) into a “snake” shape and gently wrap it around the handle to help maintain its curve without applying pressure.

Foam Tubing: Some collectors use soft foam tubing (like pipe insulation), cut to size and slit down the side, to wrap around the handle for cushioned, breathable support.

Custom Handle Pillow: Luxury enthusiasts often use small “handle pillows,” soft inserts designed to support the natural shape of handles without strain.

Dust Bag Storage: Always store your bag upright in its dust bag. Lightly stuff the interior with acid-free tissue or soft fabric or a bag insert pillow to help the bag maintain its overall structure. Avoid overstuffing.

Avoid Hanging: Never hang a bag by its handle for extended periods, as it can pull and distort the shape over time.

Protecting Your Investment: Care and Storage Tips

What items should I avoid keeping in my handbag?

To help protect your handbag’s interior, it’s best to avoid placing the following items inside:

- Loose coins or change
- Pens, markers, or ink-based items
- Glitter products
- Food, formula, or liquids
- Liquid makeup, nail polish, or lipstick
- Perfume bottles

Additionally, avoid applying hand lotion or creams just before handling your bag—especially on Vachetta leather, which is highly absorbent and prone to darkening and staining from oils.

Discoloration

What causes discoloration, and can it be reversed?

Discoloration can occur naturally over time due to exposure to light, moisture, oils, and environmental factors. Minor surface discoloration may improve with gentle cleaning, but not all discoloration can be reversed. If we attempt cleaning and find it cannot be safely improved, it will be noted in flaws and reflected in condition and or pricing.
What is dye transfer, and can it be removed?

What is dye transfer, and can it be removed?

Dye transfer occurs when pigments from darker fabrics rub onto lighter materials. While we use professional methods to minimize the appearance of dye transfer, complete removal is not always possible. If dye transfer remains after treatment, it will be noted in flaws and reflected in condition and or pricing.
Polish

Does FASHIONPHILE polish leather items, and what should I know about polishing?

FASHIONPHILE does not use any colored polishes or dyes. We only apply neutral conditioners to nourish, protect, and preserve the leather’s original finish.

If a previous owner used colored polish and it could not be safely removed, it will be noted as “painted” or “discoloration” under flaws. The condition rating and pricing will reflect this.

Yellowing and Oxidation

What does it mean if yellowing is listed in the flaws? Can it be removed?

If yellowing is listed in the flaws, it means we’ve already attempted to remove it but were unsuccessful. The item’s condition and pricing have been adjusted to reflect this discoloration. At that point, additional cleaning would not be possible, and professional restoration may be required.

Please note: Our Restoration Department uses a specialized technique that can reduce some yellowing and oxidation. Whenever possible, this method is applied, and when effective, the results are beautiful.

Exposed Piping

Can FASHIONPHILE repair exposed piping?

We do not currently repair exposed piping. Fixing piping would require paint application, which we do not offer. If piping is worn, it will be noted in flaws and factored into condition and pricing.
Peeling

How does FASHIONPHILE address peeling materials?

We do not repair peeling (such as on coated canvas or patent leather). Peeling areas are cleaned carefully but not restored. Peeling is noted in flaws and reflected in condition and pricing.
Product Use Recommendations

Does FASHIONPHILE recommend products for home care?

We are currently developing the FASHIONPHILE Investment Protection Collection, featuring safe and gentle options for at-home care. The ReNew Handbag Cleaning Kit is the first product in the collection and is available for purchase online and in-store. Until the rest are finalized, we advise against attempting home treatments, especially on delicate or exotic leathers, as improper care can cause permanent damage. Otherwise, we recommend having items professionally cleaned and conditioned to preserve their beauty, structure, and value.

When possible:

- Dust Bag Use: Always store your handbag inside its dust bag to protect it from dust and light exposure.

- Shelf Storage: Place bags upright — never hang them by their handles.

- Interior Protection: Use a properly fitted insert after removing contents to maintain shape and protect linings.

- Avoid Direct Contact: Store bags with space between them (especially patent leather).

- Public Spaces: Use a handbag hook to avoid placing your bag on wet floors or bathroom vanities..

Clean and condition your bags regularly, it will help preserve the life, look, and value of luxury handbags. Gentle cleaning removes surface dirt, while conditioning restores moisture, preventing cracking and dryness.

Regular care is a small investment that dramatically prolongs a bag’s beauty and durability.
